PERSONALITY: Reuben isn’t the happiest camper. He’s a grump who expresses his grumpiness through snark and biting sarcasm. Having been through a lot, he doesn’t have much reason to be happy. That said, he has the best time when he’s working; he’s the definition of a workaholic. Even when the lights are out, you can find him at his workbench. He approaches Pokemon battling with a cold attitude and strives to win through mind games--coincidentally, he approaches people the same way.

BIOGRAPHY: Born to a prestigious family, Reuben was raised in Hau’oli City in Alola. He obtained his first Pokemon by picking it up off the beach, bringing it home, and hiding it under his bed where he fed it table scraps and seaweed. Cyndi, as he named the Pyukumuku, escaped discovery for a week, until a maid nearly had their hand removed by the monster under the bed. His parents didn’t notice for several months.[break][break]
He received the best education money could buy on the island, and flourished in the sciences and arts alike, not that his folks noticed. Originally slated to be a traditional dancer, his career path abruptly changed because of an accident after high school. A spinal cord injury left him crippled and in pain for the rest of his life. Fed up, he tried to become a trainer, but after catching Bowie, he realized he didn’t have the youth--or desire. A lifelong love of learning drove him to pursue higher education in the Pokemon sciences.[break][break]
Reuben met a gorgeous young woman by the name of Violet during his time at a Pokemon lab. It was like a fairytale: he face planted in the sand, she laughed, helped him out, and said yes when he asked to go for drinks. Not even six months later, deeply in love, the young couple married on Melemele Island. Two years after they tied the knot, Violet gave birth to twins, Gabe and Ellie. 23 year old Reuben Maddison’s world changed when he held his newborn children in his arms. On the outside, they were the perfect family.

Things were different on the inside. Reuben was, and always had been, a workaholic; he stayed later and later at the lab, pursuing a breakthrough using forgotten research from Orre, all to secure a good life for his kids. His wife, at first, tolerated it, but when he missed the third consecutive birthday party for the twins, she didn’t bring up her concerns. She instead told the kids their father was a terrible man. She drank, more and more. She did her best to hide it from Rube, and, for a while, it worked. He denied that there were any problems, but when Reuben came home early to find her passed out and the six year olds starving for dinner, he knew something had to be done.

They had their first big fight. The altercations, consisting of shouting and nasty words, continued for years, until Violet became physical. The day he had to hide the bruises from his colleagues was the day he filed for divorce. The twins were old enough to know what was going on at 10, but still young enough to be manipulated. Their mom and her family convinced them it was their father’s fault for being absent, that if he had been there, none of this would’ve happened, and they became resentful.

Custody was decided in court, and Reuben cried.

Days later, he received an offer.

Move to Orre. Join a budding research lab.

Reuben packed up his bags and left his life behind. Years later, he rose to the top of the lab, and received another offer. Join a world-changing effort. Very hush-hush. They dug up the old research he had done in Alola, and presented it to him in a new light. They said he would have full reign of the program that would change the world as they knew it. It closes off the hearts of monsters, they explained; harnessing their abilities by taking care of those pesky desires like joy, love, and companionship.

He found a bit of kinship in the creature they showed him. Something that had been permanently changed by something completely out of its control. He agreed, and Professor Maddison has been the lead science admin in Cipher ever since.
