The fire escape was the only place Xander could get service at the moment.

Sat atop a pile of garbage bags people were too lazy to actually walk to the dumpster, the redhead tapped idly at his phone. The apartment complex was nothing special, but normally, it had better WiFi than this. Even his personal router couldn’t get anything. Convinced somebody had too many Steel-types interfering ~~or maybe there was some government interference~~, Xander ventured outside to work.

It was a yellow day, which made his desperation almost sad. He had to wear a cloth mask to keep his lungs working. Core, his Klefki, levitated beside him, staring into the alleyway below. From her key ring hung his inhaler--thankfully. He’d need it for whatever came next.

the klefki might have had the horizontal plane covered - nothing to the left or right - but it failed to account for the eye in the sky. people in the apartment had been missing some stuff lately, like random keys or shiny coins, but none had been able to find the culprit... who was currently plotting her next scheme.

the murkrow had spotted the phone, not quite glinting but giving off light - surely a valuable shiny. her feathers ruffled and she perched a bit closer to the edge of the building, waiting for the perfect moment, identifying the klefki as a potential obstacle and deciding to go for it.

it started with a tailwind, sending an updraft into the alleyway as it soared down. at the last moment she opened her wings against the wind to stop in full display in front of xander, screeching for an astonish to try and snatch the phone during his moment of surprise.

The wind caught Core by surprise. Previously floating on an invisible breeze, the gust sent her upwards, and she collided with the next platform about ten feet up in a jangling crash. ”Quit playing around,” chastised Xander. He got an alarmed jingling for his troubles. He went back to his phone.

The tinkling of keys and assorted shiny objects intensified. Irritated, the redhead looked up to finally give his Pokemon the attention it seemed to crave. Instead of showering him with keys, the Klefki wiggled in a vague motion. She always tried so, so hard to communicate, despite not really having a mouth, so Xander humored her just this once. A black crow hovered before them, wings and talons spread in a menacing gesture.

Core was amazed to find that her human was actually Normal-type. Meanwhile, Xander held up the camera to take a picture. He got a blurry shot of the fire escape after the bird snatched it from his hands. Thinking fast, Core opened her ring to throw a small house key in the Murkrow’s direction, and attempted to clamp down on either side of the smart phone. ”Give that back!” Her trainer lunged for his third most prized possession, aiming to grab the Pokemon so he could wrestle for it.

The Blackwing Bandit strikes again, thought the Murkrow as she tried to fly off with the ill-gotten gains. However, he prize felt... lighter than it should have, and a quick check showed her to have a key instead of the precious shiny phone. What happened there?

The moment of confusion gave Xander the chance to grab the body and tail of the Murkrow, sending her into a squirming fit. She cawed loudly for several moments before trying to twist around to Xander's face, inhaling, and letting out a nice smoggy haze attack, doing her best to wrestle free.

she wanted that phone. she would do everything in her power to rush the klefki the first chance she got to get to that phone.
