PERSONALITY: Adair is "untapped potential," without any motivation to tap it. Opportunity is a gift to be cherished, yet when nothing is more appealing than the next, how do decide which to take? It's difficult to invoke passion from within himself, so Adair is often drawn to things that can provide it from the outside. Necessity, risks, severity, all of which are more incentive than his own interest.[break][break]

But while he might not know exactly what he wants to do, Adair excels at focus and dedication. Give him a task and he'll perform it to the best of his abilities. Some people might call him obsessive, but he likes to think he's just very determined to succeed where failure isn't an option. He's someone to get into things only after he's already started.

BIOGRAPHY: You can be anything you want. That's a line fed to children by their parents at least once in their lives. But while Adair never questioned the can aspect of the sentiment, he did wonder about the want. When he turned ten, he thought he'd go around Kanto beating gyms to eventually challenge the Indigo League. It took taking on the Celadon City gym and losing to Erika twice before achieving his Rainbow Badge for him to realize that while maybe if he worked hard he could make it to the Elite Four, he wasn't particularly interested in doing so.[break][break]

Being a pokemon breeder was another option, sure, but that didn't suit him either. Studying pokemon behavior and learning about them was better than training, but carefully raising them for superior genetic results was tedious.[break][break]

He got it into his head that he wanted to be a pokemon researcher because it was the only field to ever stick out to him. Did he want to do it? Well, he didn't not want to, and that was good enough. His trip to the Alola islands was prompted by a curiosity regarding regional variants, and leaving behind the pokemon he'd gathered in Kanto, Adair saw it as a fresh new start. Maybe the islands would strike him in some way that Kanto couldn't.[break][break]

In a way, they did. But in a way, they didn't. Nothing about Alola drew Adair in any stronger than in Kanto, but it was here he heard about Orre. Cutthroat, unforgiving, merciless to its inhabitants, it was the answer Adair had been searching for. He abandoned the notion of personal interest and instead fell back on the basic principle of necessity. If he had to survive, if he had to fight and endure the natural hardships of the region, then there was no room for the constant questioning and hesitation that had defined his life. It was perfect.

Among all the possibilities he could have dreamed up for himself though, Adair wouldn't have included criminal. But after years in Orre, he found himself conducting research for not himself, but an organization. In Cipher, there's an underlying threat in every task, every objective, every order: success is mandatory. He's never experienced such an effective motivator. No longer does Adair question whether he wants to do research or not; he will, and he'll use whatever means necessary in the process. There's no doubt that he can, and what he wants is largely irrelevant.[break][break]

He's always thought he preferred it that way.

HISTORY: Caught in Alola, he objected to being called Old Timer so they compromised with Timer. After his heart was sealed, the once peaceful, lazy pokemon became exceptionally aggravated and aggressive. Adair has a running log of behavior changes and correlation to power specifically for Timer.
